Conservative organizers of a trucking protest targeting Washington D.C.’s Beltway threatened to cause total gridlock over the holiday weekend, but several hours into the protest their presence has caused barely a hiccup.

Approximately 30 trucks formed a convoy on I-495 for the “Ride for the Constitution” in protest of the FMCSA’s new rules regarding hours of service, rising fuel prices, and several other points of government policy. Participants at one point took up all four lanes of the highway, reducing traffic to 15 miles per hour, until Virginia State Troopers issued a warning against impeding traffic. Participants plan to maintain a continuous loop around the Beltway throughout the weekend and possibly into the Columbus Day holiday on Monday.
Ride organizers announced that several thousand truckers would converge on the nation’s capital from rallying points in surrounding states. Though the actual turnout is significantly lower than their expectations, organizers maintain that more truckers could show up over the next three days.
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and American Trucking Associations have disclaimed any involvement with or sponsorship of the “Ride for the Constitution”, stating that they do not support the truckers participating in the protest and that they advocate addressing issues in a professional manner.
State police in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania have added officers to their weekend duty rotations in preparation for a possible uptick in protest activity, though they will not interfere with the protest as long as its participants act lawfully.
