Since transportation industry success is based on traveling the road, driver distraction is the last thing a trucking business needs. Mobile devices continue to rapidly evolve, but a new study was conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety that analyzed the effects of hands-free and voice-to-text technology on drivers on the road. Apparently, the results shoot down the notion that using such technology as opposed to regularly talking on a cell phone while driving is safer. The study states that using these hands-free devices while driving diverts the brain’s attention off of the road, preventing the driver from being able to react correctly or quickly to issues on the road. With these findings, it will be important for trucking companies to employ both education and policies that prevent accidents caused by devices that appear safer, but actually aren’t.
