Like it or not, the electronic logging device mandate continues moving forward. The trucking elog mandate cleared the White House’s Office of Management and Budget on March 11. The latest approval cleared the way for a Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. Today, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) took the next step and announced four basic elements of the mandate:

1. All drivers required to keep records of duty status must use an Electronic Logging Device (ELD)

2. Specific performance and design standards for ELD’s

3. The HOS-related documentation drivers will be required to carry

4. Driver harassment protections regarding the mandatory use of ELD’s

When will truckers need to comply? The date of compliance will be two years after the final rule is published, which will likely be later in 2014.
