This Thanksgiving, Thank a Trucker

Phil Cohen

Thanksgiving week is upon us, and in these relatively quiet days of gratitude and reflection we want to send a heartfelt thank you to truckers around the country. Truckers’ sacrifices often go unheeded, but there are so many reasons to be thankful for truckers this season.

Thank a Trucker

Most importantly, truckers deliver what you need. They deliver turkeys and produce for your grand Thanksgiving feast, the newest gaming consoles and toys for your Black Friday trip, and the holiday cards you send and receive. We take everyday items for granted, but many are only available to us because of a trucker.

It is impossible to overstate how critical truckers are to our economy. Truckers deliver everything that helps our society function. Far more than consumer products make the long haul from production to consumption; building materials, medicine, and resources for disaster relief all make the trek by truck for at least part of their journey.

Do you drive a car? Thank a trucker. Truckers deliver not only the cars themselves to local dealerships, but also the gas you put in them every week.

While you sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with your loved ones, many truckers will spend the holiday alone in their trucks. Every day, truckers sacrifice time with their families to make your family time better. They miss birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones we take for granted, just to make sure their loads are delivered on time.

Weather doesn’t stop a trucker, either. Truckers step up during cataclysmic snowstorms, floods, and natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy to fill store shelves and provide support to communities in need.

Truckers are also compassionate members of society who put their many hours on the road to even greater use. Truckers Against Trafficking partners with other trucking organizations dedicated to reporting instances of human trafficking that they encounter while on a haul. Human trafficking victimizes hundreds of thousands of youths every year and groups like TAT work tirelessly to bring that number down.

This is just a short list of the many contributions truckers make to improve our everyday lives. So this holiday season, when you’re giving thanks for family, friends, and food, take a moment to give thanks for our truckers.
