According to preliminary findings by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the for-hire trucking industry cut 3,500 payroll jobs in June. This decrease in jobs comes on top of the roughly 2,600 jobs reportedly cut in May.
While the trucking industry cut jobs, the economy as a whole reflected the general trend of industries adding new jobs, as total nonfarm employment grew by 195,000 in June, and growth in April and May were revised upward to roughly the same number, according to BLS estimates. Last month, employment increased in leisure and hospitality, professional and businesses services, retail trade, financial activities, and health care. The unemployment rate remained the same though, at 7.6.
Compared to June 2012, the for-hire trucking industry is up 30,300 jobs, or 2.2%.
The BLS trucking estimates include all payroll employment in for-hire trucking but not trucking-related jobs in other fields, like a truck driver for a private fleet.
